Lot of people buying high end headphones these days end up very disappointed. Simply go through reviews of any online shop that sells headphones.
Why do these high end head phones sound bad ?

The answer to this is not the headphones themselves but the sources to which people connect these. If you're connecting your high end Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Sony, shure etc to your little ipod and expecting nirvana it's not gonna happen. Most portable music players barring a few i.e. some cowon and sony players are designed to work with very efficient earplugs. They do not have enough power to exploit these high end headphones to their full potential.

To get the most out of these high end headphones you need a decent source or an amplifier and offcourse very high quality content.
Most people think of any mp3 file with more than 128kps as high end. What you really should look at is the sample rate, listen to stuff that is rippped at 48khz or more sampling rates, flac or audio cd's.

The little Cmoy amplifier is literally a Goliath in David form, for what it costs it sounds absolutely amazing. There's a huge market for headphone related stuff and the snake oil bandwagon have joined this. You'll find insanely priced headphone amplifiers with what not. The reality is any decent op-amp even the humble NE5532 can and will drive these headphones quite easily, with silghtly better ones i.e. opa2134 , LME4562 you get amazing sound quality.

Chu Moy is a very popular headphone amplifier that’s easy to build yet sounds good, it can be built small enough to fit in a pocket, power supply and all. It’s powerful enough to drive very inefficient headphones to high volumes from even weak sources. CMoy pocket amplifier is an ideal project to get started in audio DIY.
The kit contains all essentials needed to build a complete amplifier. All resistors included are 1% metal film type, high quality film and electrolytic caps, high quality potentiometer, jacks and even input cable. A build guide and schematic can be found below, which explains in sufficient detail the steps needed to build this amp.

Good Build to start DIYs

this was my first soldering experience. i liked the help extended by their e-mails, when I was stuck with something. It sounds decent. As I am not experienced enough, i did not rate it. I liked the sound produced by this amplifier. I liked it more, when i hooked it up onto my friend's AKG K451, But she perceived a lil'bit difference in the bass range. We need to try more to be sure about it. The owner said that he will offer some cases for these c moys. Altoids cant carry 2 9V. Thanks.

Good Headphone Amplifier

The kit is what I was looking for. PCB built quality is excellent, Component quality is good. The kit has a very good sound quality. No heat perceived when operational. The battery backup is quiet good. I powered the kit with two 300mAH battery and the kit ran for 8 hours continuously with still some juice remaining in the battery. All in all it is an wonderful package and am pleased with its performance. On the price front it could have been a bit lower.

Excellent sound packed in a small unit

I had this Kit about 10 days ago and could assemble it over the weekend... Initial impressions with all default components is simply superb. did a fabulous job in packing the kit and shipment part. It includes everything as stated on site. The components are of very good quality and as stated on site, all caps are panasonic, wimas. This kit does not include cabinet, volume knob and batteries. Assembling is a breeze with documentation provided and the details available on PCB. The OPAMP provided is opa2134 and is sounding quite good. I have tested it with LM4562 and as expected its sounding even better on lows with LM4562. The unit has excellent gain and volume knob is around 9am level to have sufficient gain and dont think anyone would want to put it beyond 12pm mark on volume control. For time being I have put this in a small plastic box and is quite compact to carry anywhere... This runs on two 9V batteries and battery connectors are provided with the kit. Battery life yet to test.. The only thing that can further improve this PCB is positioning of the volume knob, at times i felt it little inconvenient to put my hand in between two in/out 3.5mm plugs to adjust volume but thats not a show stopper in any way. The support Sasmit gives is fantastic and is just what every DIY enthusiast would want to have when trying something themselves. Overall am happy with the amount spent and what i ended up with which is what matters
